Learning from home Week 1 (March 18)

Good Morning!

We hope these first few days of quarantine are going well for you and your family.
All the First Grade teachers in the district have been working together to come up with a
cohesive plan to support our students during these strange and unprecedented times.
Please find included below a Choice Board. The intention is to provide you with
suggestions to help you keep your child’s learning to this point fresh.
We will provide a new Choice Board each week by Wednesday at 8am.

Your Lincoln teachers hurriedly sent home a number of things on Friday
that you may wish to include as your child is working over the next several weeks.
Included in the take home packet Friday was a blank notebook that can be used
as a journal. There is a page that includes different journal topics. Several math review
pages were also included.  For the most part these are pages the students can complete
independently if you wish to have them do so. We included some words that we
call “Bossy R.” There are a number of different pages that allow the students to interact
with these words.

If you’d like to access our regular online learning sites please start here,
on the Lincoln Symbaloo

We do not want to overwhelm anyone with work.  Please know that all of this is
suggested, not required! Four weeks is a long time to be away from our classes.
We would LOVE to hear from our Firsties. We would enjoy seeing pictures or videos
of work they’re doing or just to say hi, receiving emails, and having the opportunity
to listen to them read.

Also included below is a link to sign up for a phone meeting for your student and me.

Thank you for all you’re doing.  We are here if you need us.

Best,

Mrs. Fiesbeck, Ms. Harmening, and Mrs. Jun

School Cancellation Information

Dear Families,

The First Grade team at Lincoln has been busy preparing for this next month apart from your children.  We are sending a number of things home today for your child to work on in the coming days. Please check our blogs weekly on Wednesdays.  In our blog posts each week we will assign specific tasks from the materials we’ve sent home and provide any necessary explanations.

If your child was absent today materials will be available for pickup in the office today between 4:00-4:15 and next week Monday-Wednesday from 8:00-4:00.

As a reminder our usual online tools: RAZ, IXL, Lexia, Epic, Scholastic Book Flix, and Moby, are available and an excellent resource.

If any questions please reach out to us via email any time.  We will be checking in regularly.

Stay safe and healthy!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Fiesbeck, Ms. Harmening, Mrs. Jun

Personal Space

During our SEL time with Mrs. VanHekken we explored the idea of personal space.  This can be a tricky concept for 6 and 7 year olds.  Anything you can do to reinforce this work is greatly appreciated.  Something as simple as using the phrase "personal space" at home can go a long way.

Conferences

Spring conferences are scheduled on an as-needed basis. If you have not heard from me I do not think a conference is necessary at this point.  However, if you would like to meet with me to discuss your child's progress I am more than happy to set something up!

What are we Learning?

  • Reviewing long vowel patterns (ee, ea, ei, ue, ew, oo, ay, ai, etc).  These are tricky and take a lot of practice.
  • Finishing up with Y as a vowel (funny, sky, slippery, silly, spy, etc)
  • Beginning Bossy R
  • Finishing up with light and sound and starting to dig in to "Animal Superpowers"
  • Adding/subtracting multiples of 10
  • Time (to the hour and half hour)
  • Money
  • Making inferences
  • Pacing and pausing in our reading
  • Nailing down the reading and writing of high frequency words
  • Apologizing
  • Writing complete sentences rather than fragments
  • Comparing and contrasting (Venn diagram time!)

Upcoming Events

  • Monday is Dr. Seuss's birthday/National Read Across America Day! Feel free to send in a Dr. Seuss book for your Firstie. We will read several together throughout the day.
  • Our next reward day will be Wednesday. We will have an extra recess and a sweet treat.
  • Wednesday is also National Grammar Day!
  • Thursday we will celebrate the 120th day of school. (This is more low key the 101st day).
  • March 14 is a Saturday, but don't miss National Potato Chip Day!
  • March 19 is National Let's Laugh Day.  Please send your Firstie to school armed with a joke!
  • We will get some fresh air outside on March 30 for National Take a Walk in the Park Day.
  • March 31 is National Crayon Day.  I have no idea how we will celebrate but it's bound to be fun!
